Re: "Teachers rally in Olympia for pay raises, smaller classes" (TNT, 4-26).
I was disappointed in the coverage of the teacher rally in Olympia. It was a missed opportunity for reporting on the woeful inadequacy of our state legislators to fulfill their paramount duty.
I believe the issue goes far beyond asking for a pay raise and lower class size. I would have written the headline as, "Teachers rally in Olympia: Legislators, do your job."
Support from Gov. Jay Inslee and House Speaker Frank Chopp was nice, but teachers need more. Teachers had cost-of-living adjustments taken away, and class sizes have steadily increased. At the same time, accountability demands have increased with a new teacher evaluation system, Common Core State Standards and Smarter Balanced Assessments.
Never miss a local story.
While this accountability has merit, the message from legislators seems to be, "Just work harder with less resources" (certainly with little respect). In other words, the beatings will continue until morale improves. Teachers deserve more.
