I worked at Submarine Base Bangor for more than 20 years, going from a marine machinist to a quality assurance supervisor. What I saw was a dedicated group of people who saw to it that every time a sub went out to sea that it came back after the patrol with all the crew members able to return to their families.
Yes, the upkeep on them is not cheap, but the upside is that they keep the leaders of countries that hate us where they belong.
If the letter writer would look at the federal budget, he would find that more is spent on education and health care than on the Department of Defense.
