I read the one-sided Matt Driscoll column (TNT, 5-19) regarding Anders Ibsen, a Tacoma City Council member with intelligence and courage shaking the status quo. The proof is that all current council members except for Ryan Mello endorsed on of Ibsen’s opponents as soon as he filed for the seat.
These same council members refused to allow voters to decide whether to keep the current council-manager form of government or change to an elected mayor with executive power and a smaller council. Ibsen and Mello said, “Let the people decide.” The rest said, essentially, “We do not trust the voters and will not let them make this decision.”
It is this mentality that has retarded the growth and stature of our city. Let no one fight for change; it might endanger those in power.
Tacoma needs the likes of Ibsen to represent the people, not the special interests served by the status quo.
