Recently, police officers have been removed from Point Defiance Park, replaced by a volunteer watch. I have been running at the park for more than 40 years and am very concerned for safety for all park users who walk, run or ride on the roads.
Many wonderful enhancements to the park are planned, but none directed toward park safety. Cars are speeding through the park, endangering people and animals. Bottles and other objects are thrown at people and some vehicles swerve dangerously close to runners and bikers.
On the trails, unleashed dogs have attacked people and their dogs. Many cars are broken into and damaged as a lark. Bikers are riding illegally, endangering walkers and runners. A passenger in a car was killed several years ago, and many years ago a young girl was murdered in the park.
These conditions have not improved, and it is up to the Metro Parks board to see that people's safety comes first over other park improvements. I love Point Defiance Park, and I volunteered my time as did so many others for several years. I would like to see full-time police officers patrolling the park, as well as park watch volunteers. Let's get it started.
