Re: "New policy will limit ballet, open stage for different shows" (TNT, 6-2).
It is obvious that the plan to limit consecutive weekly bookings of the Pantages Theater does harm to Ballet Tacoma. Of the many resident companies that use the Pantages venue, Ballet Tacoma is the single company that books the theater for two weeks or more in December for its wonderful productions of "The Nutcracker" ballet.
Ballet Tacoma is a cultural value to our community. The company has not only provided excellent productions for decades, it has hosted "Nutcracker" school performances for years for kids who are unlikely to benefit from the art culture that Tacoma can offer.
The mission statement of the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts includes a call for "prosperity" for the arts community. Denying Ballet Tacoma to use the venue that provides the company its major revenue is hard to reconcile with the mission statement that includes "ensuring our children's development through education and the arts."
I hope that the Broadway Center takes a hard look at how it values the hometown arts groups, patrons and grantors that have been the core of community support for a vibrant arts environment.
