Re: "Bales writes his mind was consumed by war and hate" (TNT, 6-7).
Sgt. Robert Bales is asking for a reduced sentence for his crime of multiple murders in Afghanistan. He says he now realizes that his mind was consumed by war and that what he thought was normal was actually the farthest thing from being normal.
So what is normal? Normal is people here and in allied countries carrying on normal and routine lives while war in the Middle East goes on and on. The war is just what appears on the news and in the newspapers.
What is normal to graduates from college this year is that they have never known a time in their lives when we haven't been at war. Normal is simply believing what our government tells us and believing that something positive will actually someday materialize.
Never miss a local story.
Normal is surrendering to the idea that you can't go to a Mariners game without being frisked down. The new norm is that our own government spies on us.
I do not condone what Bales did at all. He went to war with certain ideals. He participated firsthand in the fighting. He had not been able to acquire the normal mental ability to block from his mind the insanity around him. He was unlike most of us normal people.
