In September, I emailed Pierce County Councilman Dan Roach asking why Pierce County has not released financial numbers for the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. He replied that he would pressure for those numbers to be provided to the public.
Since then I have heard nothing even though I sent a reminder on Oct. 23.
I cannot believe that those numbers are not yet available four months after the end of the event. Lakewood released its numbers weeks ago.
Given Pierce County’s professional accounting staff, I have trouble understanding the holdup. How can the taxpayer trust the numbers provided by the county in support of its proposed administration building when we have to wait an extended period to get the final numbers on a golf tournament?
If the final numbers are negative and the event had to be supported by general fund money, the taxpayers would rather have the bad news sooner rather than later.
