Dear Mr. Griffey: Please help the Mariners reach the playoffs one more time. We still lovingly recall 1995, when you returned to lead your team to an historic comeback over the Angels and to an elimination of the dreaded Yankees.
This month, you returned again. Not to play, but to retire number 24. Still, your presence, and the lasting buzz, filled the seats of Safeco Field with fans. Those fans cheered on the M’s to a six-game winning streak. Those wins put us back into the very heart of the American League Wild Card race.
I’m asking you to return one more time. You don’t even have to do it in person. But would you please write a letter, or film a short video, asking the fans to keep filling the seats, keep cheering on the team, all the way into the playoffs.
You could do it, Kid. You might be the only one who could. In this city of 12s, you could help rally the 10s.
Help us, Ken Griffey Jr. You’re our only hope
