Re: “ The state’s domestic partnership law” (TNT, 7-23).
I am celebrating a small but important milestone on the way to full equality for all people in Washington state.
Some of my friends and neighbors registered their domestic partnerships Monday. This registration will provide a few limited rights which they have been denied until this new domestic partnership law went into effect.
They are still denied the full civil rights and responsibilities which other couples enjoy merely because of their partners’ gender. Someday, when we all enjoy the right to public recognition of our commitments, we will look back on this day as we do on the end of laws preventing marriage between people of different races.
We know that no one is free when some are restricted from freedom. We can cheer today, but the big celebration will have to wait until all citizens have equal rights.
