Doris Jairala, a personal acquaintance, was featured on the front page because the bus service she relies on for work is being eliminated (TNT, 6-30). This is a significant issue for her because her medical condition doesn’t allow her to drive.
We just don’t understand how this could happen. How in the world could a region where millions of dollars have been spent convincing people to abandon their individual cars to use the millions and millions of dollars of new and expanded mass transit be told it’s no longer affordable?
Perhaps this is just another example of the ineptitude of our government. No, I don’t really believe that. What I do believe is that the good people we have elected continue to select good programs and important bus routes to eliminate because they know that will illicit the most public outrage, hence providing a continued platform to support wholesale tax increases.
Yes, I am willing to pay my fair share. But I’m not willing to support misleading advertising campaigns for programs and projects which are only as serious to the vitality of our region as there are extra unimportant public dollars to support those programs.
