BRUCE AND JEAN DRANSFELDT
The United States Open Golf Championship is the most prestigious of the four major golf tournaments in the world, at least in the opinion of many. In its four-day run, the U.S. Open draws crowds well over 120,000, and people come from all over the world to watch this competition and support their favorite golfers.
THE PRESIDENTS OF WASHINGTON’S PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES
A recent study by the University of Pennsylvania criticizing Washington’s higher education system identifies some real problems but lands wide of the mark in offering solutions. The report leaves the impression that Washington’s higher education system is fundamentally broken. We do not believe it is.
DAVID BATKER AND JOHN DE GRAAF
With bated breath, the world’s markets recently waited for the announcement of the U.S. fourth-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate – a potential bellwether for the global economy. It turned out to be 2.8 percent.
JANICE PITTMAN
I walk in McCormick Forest Park four to five times a week with my two Labs, Arlo and Dooby. I feel I have an ownership of the woods because of the many volunteer hours I’ve spent working on the trails that were put through this beautiful forest in Gig Harbor.
KATHIE ZURFLUH
A Feb. 5 News Tribune article described the Tacoma School District’s efforts to be designated as Washington state’s first “district-wide Innovative School Zone.”
WALTER BACKSTROM
I had always been curious about homeless people: who they are and what they’re about. Recently I ran out of options, admitted I was homeless and went to a homeless shelter in Seattle. My questions were answered.
CAROL PLAEHN
I am an unrepentant bargain hunter. Garage sales, estate sales, thrift shop and secondhand stores are my friends. I visit them for entertain-ment and for saving money.
CONNIE LADENBURG AND LUIS MOSCOSO
The nightmare of young people involved in violent crimes and other lawlessness torments not just our hard-hit city neighborhoods but also our suburbs, small towns and rural communities. Young people bent on drug-trafficking, robbery, rape, murder – these kids ignore maps and stereotypes.
TAMI GREEN AND TROY KELLEY
We all want to create jobs; the question is, how do you do it?
JOSHUA SIZEMORE
When I’m on the job, everyone knows that I’m an Army sergeant who works as a print and photo journalist. I’ve been in the military for five years, deployed once and am currently stationed at Wiesbaden Army Airfield, Germany. But what I’ve kept secret most of my career is that I’ve been attacked repeatedly by fellow soldiers because I’m bisexual.

Re: “Our state’s dental system is letting too many patients down” (Viewpoint, 1-29).
ROBIN ORDONEZ
I have read with great interest the debate between state Sen. Mike Carrell (Viewpoint, 1-26) and Lakewood Deputy City Manager Don Anderson (Viewpoint, 1-27) regarding the provision of sewer service to the Tillicum/American Lake Gardens area of the city.
KEN MILLER
Local governments are beat up: Costs keep rising, citizens won’t pay more but won’t accept less service. To save local government, some communities have redefined the boundaries. Maybe we should do the same.
STEVEN V. RESTIVO
In an effort to further educate residents of Tacoma about the economic benefits a Walmart store would bring to the area, we’d like to take the opportunity to set the record straight about claims made in a recent Viewpoint, “Research indicates new Walmart store could hurt Tacoma’s economy” (TNT, 1-22).
JOHN S. MILLS
On Jan. 19, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Washington’s new top-two primary. The decision dispensed with many objections to the new system but didn’t address its principal problem: It severely curtails voter choice.
