For those who like their crab fresh, the season opens Thursday in all areas of Puget Sound except Marine Area 7 (San Juan Islands), opening later this summer, and Marine Area 13 (Olympia), which is already open.
Marine Area 11 (Tacoma) and Area 12 (Hood Canal) will be open Thursdays-Mondays through Sept. 1.
The limit is five male dungeness crab, which must measure 6.25 inches across. Fishermen can keep six red rock crab, of either sex, and the crab must be 5 inches across.

The count of sockeye salmon at the Ballard locks has shown a slow return. As of Saturday, just 4,024 sockeye have made their way through the locks. The preseason forecast is a return of 167,000 fish, well below the 350,000 fish needed to consider a fishery.
