We had our first snow on Oct. 15, which was very early for around here. It didn’t stay long, but one of the girls said, “Oh, good, now we don’t have to rake leaves!”
“Authentic” is a word thrown around the foreign restaurant scene with abandon. It lures diners in with the promise of being transported to a faraway land where they rub elbows with locals fresh from a National Geographic photo shoot. But too much authentic and diners flee for the Americanized safety of Olive Garden and Panda Express.

Making dinner easier is the goal. We can’t fix the economy or cure global warming, but we can make weeknights less stressful and eating throughout the week more healthful.

Once upon a time, in a land called USA, there was rice. It was called Uncle Ben’s or Riceland. It was white or brown, converted or instant.
We won’t be doing laundry today, as we usually do on Mondays. It is a chilly and cloudy morning. Instead, we did a big laundry on Saturday. It was the nicest day of the week and everything dried well. These nice laundry days seem to be rare this fall.

Delicious pink shrimp are a trademark of the Florida Keys. I like to serve them as they do in Key West, leaving the shrimp in their shells and spreading newspaper on the table. Place the cooked shrimp in a bowl and just peel and eat. Serve with coleslaw and Italian bread.
