The placemat is a favorite at many dinner tables: The often-whimsical plastic version catches the slip of spaghetti from a youngster’s fork, while a nice cotton placemat elevates the dining experience just a little without having to set down a whole tablecloth.
How is it that one of the most-used rooms in many homes is also one of the most neglected? This spring-cleaning season, take some time out to set up your laundry room so that washing and drying aren’t such a chore. Paint, decorate and organize, and it will become a room you’ll want to spend some time in. (And if you have a laundry room, you will spend time there: The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans wash 400 loads of laundry a year.)

Now that we’re halfway through May, it’s time for color, time for planting most annuals and bedding plants, time to fertilize roses, perennials and young vegetable starts, and time to buy a new pair of gardening gloves. This is the month for planting, weeding, feeding, seeding and pleading with the weather.
