TRACKING LOCAL GOLFERS ON THE PGA TOUR
This week: WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Firestone Country Club South Course, Akron, Ohio.
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore.
Never miss a local story.
Second-round score: 3-over-par 73.
Position: Moore (2-under 138) is tied for 18th, nine strokes behind leader Sergio Garcia (11-under 129).
Recap: It wasn’t a good back nine for Moore. He birdied the 10th hole on a short putt to get back to even par for the day. But he made three bogeys the rest of the way, including an adventurous one on the 16th hole — a par 5 playing 667 yards. From the left rough, his second shot caromed off tree branches and took a wicked bounce deeper into the trees. He had to punch out twice. Moore saved bogey when he hit a 6-iron approach close from 190 yards, then made a 6-foot putt.
Tee time Saturday: 5 a.m. (PDT).
This week: Barracuda Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Montreux Golf and Country Club, Reno, Nevada
In the field: Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley and University Place’s Michael Putnam.
Second-round scores: Stanley had a plus-11 in modified Stableford scoring, and Putnam had a plus-3.
Positions: Stanley (plus-16) is tied for 17th, and Putnam (plus-11) is tied for 44th — both trailing leader Nick Watney (plus-26)
Recap: This format rewards birdies and eagles, and on the strength of eight birdies, Stanley climbed the leaderboard. Three of those birdies came on the final four holes, starting at No. 6 (wedge approach shot to 12 feet) and ending at No. 9 (7-foot putt). … Putnam couldn’t get anything going (plus-1 through 12 holes), but he finished off his round by hitting a wedge shot to within 10 feet at the ninth hole and making the putt for birdie.
Tee times Saturday: Putnam at 10:10 a.m. (PDT) and Stanley at 12:50 p.m. Both go off the 10th tee.
