This week: The Players Championship, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
In the field: University Place’s Michael Putnam and Puyallup’s Ryan Moore.
First-round scores: Putnam shot an even-par 72, and Moore had a 1-over 73,
Positions: Putnam is tied for 60th, and Moore is tied for 77th — both trailing co-leaders David Hearn, Charley Hoffman and Hideki Matsuyama (67).
Recap: Putnam started off well, hitting a wedge approach close on the 10th hole — his first hole — and sinking a 5-foot putt for birdie. He reached 2 under before making two quick bogeys at the turn — including a final one at the third hole. But he birdied No. 4 with his best approach shot of the day, stopping it 2 feet from the cup at the par 4. It was Putnam’s first round at The Players Championship of par or better. … Moore saw his string of five consecutive under-par opening rounds at TPC Sawgrass come to an end in the afternoon wave of play. A double bogey at the 18th hole (had to lay up out of left rough, hit third shot into greenside bunker) midway through his round did not help. And after he battled back with two final-nine birdies (Nos. 2, 6), he missed an 8-foot par putt at No. 8 for a final bogey.
Tee times Friday: Moore at 5:07 a.m. (PDT) and Putnam at 9:46 a.m. Both go off the first tee.
