Third baseman Tyler Thompson drove in four runs and Emerald Ridge High graduate Kyle Rossman struck out eight in eight innings as second-seeded Pacific Lutheran beat No. 3 Birmingham-Southern, 7-2, at the NCAA Div. III South Regional on Thursday.
The Lutes — ranked 19th in the latest d3baseball.com poll — improved to 32-12 and wrapped up the second day of regionals as the lone team without a loss in the double-elimination tournament.
Seventh-ranked Birmingham Southern fell to 35-11-1 and will take on top-seeded Rhodes in an elimination game Friday. The Lutes will play the winner of that game at 4 p.m. (PDT)
Rossman, a sophomore right-hander, threw a season-high 138 pitches. Senior right-hander AJ Konopaski pitched the ninth inning and the Lutes did not make an error against Birmingham-Southern after making five Wednesday.
"We needed a quality start from Kyle, and he delivered," PLU coach Geoff Loomis said. "And to play error-free baseball one night after making five errors, well it's exactly the kind of response I've come to expect from this group."
Fife High graduate Collin Nilson had three hits for the Lutes.
