This week: The Memorial Tournament, Thursday through Sunday, Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, University Place’s Michael and Andrew Putnam, and Olympia’s Andres Gonzales.
First-round scores: Moore shot a 5-under-par 67, Andrew Putnam had an even-par 72, Gonzales shot a 1-over 73, and Michael Putnam had a 3-over 75.
Positions: Moore is tied for fifth, Andrew Putnam is tied for 69th, Gonzales is tied for 85th, and Michael Putnam is tied for 102nd — all trailing co-leaders Hideki Matsuyama and Bo Van Pelt (64).
Recap: When Moore finished his final practice round Wednesday, he was both perplexed and disgusted with the way he was hitting the ball. He took a break, went back to the practice range, and was one of the last golfers to leave the premises — even though he had an early tee time Thursday. A tweak in his setup was one key in shooting his best round at the Memorial. He hit his 20-degree hybrid approach shot close on the par-5 fifth hole (4-foot putt) to highlight his stellar front nine (31). In fact, he led for much of the morning wave before his chip shot from the rough at the 16th hole came out dead instead of with the juice Moore was expecting. It led to a double bogey. But on the next hole, Moore drilled a 20-foot putt for his final birdie. … The Putnam brothers combined for just four birdies on the day. Andrew had three of them, including a pair of them late at No. 5 (11-footer at par 5 after laying up) and No. 8 (10-footer at par 3). … Muirfield Village is a course where you can make birdies and bogeys in a hurry, and Gonzales showed that Thursday (five bogeys, four birdies) in his Memorial debut. He got up-and-down from the greenside bunker at No. 15 for his final birdie to get back to even par, but he dropped a shot on the next hole, a par 3, when his tee shot landed in a greenside bunker.
Tee times Friday: Gonzales at 4:20 a.m. (PDT) off the 10th tee, Michael Putnam at 4:42 a.m. off the 10th tee, Andrew Putnam at 5:50 a.m. off the first tee and Moore at 10:05 a.m. off the 10th tee.
