This week: FedEx St. Jude Classic, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennessee.
In the field: University Place’s Andrew Putnam and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley.
World ranking: Putnam is 367th, and Stanley is 640th.
2014-15 earnings: Putnam has $264,336 (160th on the PGA Tour), and Stanley has $51,590 (210th on the PGA Tour).
The skinny: Asked to trace his recent struggles with his swing, Putnam said it has been a combination of mechanical issues and rhythm. He said that in practice rounds, he has gone back to stuff he did as a teenager — hitting cuts, draws and a variety of other shots — just so he feels a little less restricted. He said it has freed up his swing a little bit. He tied for 68th (6-over 294) at last week’s Memorial Tournament but was inside the top 25 at the midway point. … Stanley has enough PGA Tour status to get into select events. And with this being the week before the U.S. Open — a week that many top players take off — the Bellarmine Prep graduate got into the field. His last PGA Tour start was in February, when he missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (4-under 211). He recently tied for 11th at the Rex Hospital Open on the Web.com Tour.
Tee times Thursday: Stanley at 5 a.m. (PDT) off the 10th tee and Putnam at 11:40 a.m. off the first tee.
