This week: Wyndham Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, North Carolina
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, Olympia’s Andres Gonzales, University Place’s Michael and Andrew Putnam, Tacoma’s Troy Kelly and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley.
First-round scores: Moore shot a 4-under-par 66, Kelly and Stanley each had a 2-under 68, Michael Putnam shot an even-par 70, Gonzales had a 3-over 73, and Andrew Putnam shot a 4-over 74.
Positions: Moore is tied for 20th, Kelly and Stanley are tied for 66th, Michael Putnam is tied for 103rd, Gonzales is tied for 136th, and Andrew Putnam is tied for 147th — all trailing co-leaders Erik Compton and William McGirt (62).
Recap: It is hard to believe the 66 on Thursday was Moore’s best opening round since early March (6-under 66 at WGC-Cadillac Championship). Of course, Moore has good vibes from this tournament — he won the 2009 Wyndham Championship for his first PGA Tour title. He hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation and went to 4 under for good at the eighth hole (his 17th hole), where he rolled in a 17-foot putt for birdie. … Stanley had his sixth consecutive under-par score to open a PGA Tour tournament. He birdied No. 5 (two-putt from 40 feet) and No. 7 (26-footer) to finish it off. … Kelly’s 68 is his best score in 18 rounds on the PGA Tour this season. He birdied both of his final-nine par-3 holes (Nos. 3 and 7), both on 8-foot putts. … If Michael Putnam wants to finish 16th or higher to earn a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs, he will have to make more than the one birdie he did Thursday. He also made 16 pars. … Gonzales was undone by a triple bogey at No. 11 and a finishing double bogey. On both holes, he incurred a penalty stroke for wayward tee shots. … Andrew Putnam got caught in the left tree line at the fifth hole on his way to a triple bogey-7.
Tee times Friday: Stanley at 4 a.m. (PDT) off the first tee, Michael Putnam at 4:10 a.m. off the 10th tee, Moore at 4:50 a.m. off the first tee, Gonzales at 5:10 a.m. off the 10th tee, Kelly at 9 a.m. off the first tee and Andrew Putnam at 10:50 a.m. off the first tee.
