Scouting report: The Big West Conference preseason media poll predicted that UC-Santa Barbara would finish second in the league standings, behind reigning champion UC-Irvine. But it’s been a rough start for the Gauchos. After winning at Omaha in its opener and winning at San Francisco in its fourth game, UCSB lost five consecutive games — to Arizona State, USC, South Dakota State, Vermont and Akron — before beating Iona on Dec. 22. Two other Pac-12 teams — California and Oregon State — also defeated the Gauchos earlier this season. Ken Pomeroy ranks UCSB’s strength of schedule as No. 10 in the country. … The Gauchos will be without second-leading scorer John Green, a senior forward who injured his knee in the game against Iona. He is one of three UCSB players who average double figures in scoring (11.7 ppg). … UW’s focus will likely be on leading scorer Michael Bryson, who averages 19.1 points per game and has scored 20 or more points in four games this season, including a season-high 29 points against Iona. Bryson is 34.8 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line. He also averages 35 minutes per game, and was a first-team all-conference selection as a junior last season. … Only four Gauchos players average more than 17 minutes per game, though they typically use a rotation of at least nine players, and used 12 players last week against Iona. With Green out, their top reserve is now senior forward Mitch Brewe, a 6-foot-8 product of Seattle Prep. He averages 4.8 points in 14.9 minutes per game. … UCSB is staying in Seattle to face Seattle University on Dec. 30 at KeyArena. … UCSB’s coach is Bob Williams, who is in his 18th season at the school — the longest tenure in the Gauchos’ history. His teams have played to a 291-231 record, and have won 20 or more games in a season five times. … UCSB shoots 42.1 percent from the field, 31.2 percent from 3-point range and 71.5% from the free-throw line. The Gauchos allow opponents to shoot 43.5% from the field, which ranks 211th nationally.
