I'm at Staples Center, which puts me in a distinct minority.
Not surprisingly, LA isn't abuzz about these two tournament-opening play-in games: Oregon State-Arizona State followed by WSU-Oregon. As I type this, there appear to be a few hundered folks in the building. A handful of orange shirts in one section, a handful of yellow shirts in another, and lots of empty black and purple seats everywhere else.
First half, 15:54
Oregon State forward Sasa Cuic just limped off the court and into the locker room.
ASU 38, OSU 30
(Cuic back on bench ... with crutches.)
11:05 left, Beavers cut the lead to one: 53-52.
2:47 left, and the run of the Beavers has continued. OSU up, 69-61. Suddenly those few orange shirts and much more animated than those few yellow shirts.
FINAL SCORE: OSU 71 ASU 68
ASU had the ball and a chance for a game-tying 3-point shot ... but threw the ball out of bounds.
The Beavers advance to play top-seed UCLA at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Sun Devils season ends, and likely so will coach Rob Evans tenure in Tempe.
