As the Huskies opened fall camp Tuesday, Coach Tyrone Willingham revealed that freshman defensive back/running back Leilyon Myers must be held out of practice while NCAA clearinghouse issues are resolved, and that academic issues will at least temporarily delay the eligibility of junior college transfers defensive end Anthony Atkins, safety Ashlee Palmer, and offensive lineman Aaron Mason.
Willingham also noted that starting cornerback Dashon Goldson recently suffered an ankle injury that is expected to limit his work through the first week of fall camp.
Other notes from the first day of camp:
Senior Scott White, the only returning starter from last season's linebacker corps, begins fall camp behind Dan Howell on the UW depth chart. … Willingham reiterated that top recruit Jake Locker will play this season if he earns playing time in practice. The coach also hinted that Locker might be able to help in a role other than quarterback, but later conceded a role such as defensive back or kick returner may not be realistic. … Defensive lineman Donny Mateaki will play mostly tackle. … No walk-on players have yet earned scholarships, but Willingham said a couple could during the fall, mentioning fullback Mark Palaita. … Discussing team leaders, Willingham singled out quarterback Isaiah Stanback, guard Stanley Daniels, safety C.J. Wallace and Goldson. … Willingham said massive – overly massive – offensive lineman Morgan Rosborough may have moved his weight below the 390 pounds listed in the media guide, adding, "but I'm not sure if he's had breakfast this morning."
