Former defensive end Walt Winter of Juanita High School was shifted to tight end last week after injuries to Michael Gottlieb and Robert Lewis.
This week he moved past redshirt freshman Tim Williams on the depth chart, right behind starter Johnie Kirton.
I spoke to Winter today and got a few more quotes than I'll be able to use in the paper tomorrow.
Here are a few.
Never miss a local story.
ON LEARNING OF THE SWITCH: "Excited, I wanted to get on the field. Anything I can get to be on the field.
ON HIS PASS CATCHING: " I've been catching all the balls that have been thrown to me in practice. I'm learning the routes and all of the play calls, but I feel like the hands are there."
ON HIS POSITION WHEN RECRUITED: "I got recruited as a linebacker, but they told me linebacker or tight end, just see where I could help the team out. I do love tight end. I love being on the field. In the all-state game they told me I could play linebacker or tight end, and I chose tight end. I do like tight end quite a bit."
ON WHETHER THE MOVE IS PERMANENT: "I feel like if I play well then it's something I'll stay with, so hopefully I'll play well and I'll stay. Depending on the way things happen. Injuries happen, and if a defensive end gets hurt, maybe I'll have to go fill in there. Or not. It's hard to say."
