Some quotes that arrived too late to make the Sunday paper:
From UW coach Tyrone Willingham: I'm really pleased with the running game, more so earlier in the game than later. I'm pleased with how the guys came out and ran the ball. The backs did a nice job. (UW had 154 rushing yards on 40 carries.)
UW linebacker Dan Howell (two tackles): "Tonight we didn't come out fast enoug, and Arizona took advantage of that. ... (Arizona) played well and had some big plays, but we just played better tonight."
UW linebacker Scott White (10 tackles, 2 sacks): Every game in this league is a must-win. So we came out tonight and we wanted to get momentum for the rest of our games."
Never miss a local story.
UW quarterback Isaiah Stanback (14-of-25 for 293 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception; 10 carries for 47 yards): "The coaches were calling the plays, and we just executed. That's all it was. ... We're a different team this year than we were last year when we played here ... We did a good job of executing in the second quarter, but to tell you the truth, I'm not that happy right now. We won, but the defese definitely saved out butts."
UW receiver Sonny Shackelford (five catches, 105 yards and one TD): "Being a snior, I hope I am one of our go-to guys. I just try to keep making plays. ... (Arizona was) playing us man-to-man mostly. We saw that on the sideline as they weren't respecting us. We kept telling the coaches, and we went out and made plays."
UA coach Mike Stoops: "Give credit to (UW coach Tyrone Willingham). His kids make plays. They did a great job believing in themselves."
Stoops on his offense: "We got down there a couple of times and hurt ourselves, which is somewhat frustrating. We have got to get better at protecting the quarterback. Ultimately it comes down to not being able to run the football. We're just not playing good enough. ... I think we let a good opportunity slip away. Washington is a good football team. We need to believe in our quarterback and keep building around him."
Stoops on Stanback: "He has a tremendous arm and his receivers make nice catches. He is a good player, and is a great threat running the ball."
UA linebacker Spencer Larsen: "It was a tough game. We needed this win tonight, and a game like this is about as crucial as they come. ... This team still hasn't learned how to get up for every game. ... In the second half, (our defense) did all the things we talked about all week. We just played, didn't give up big plays and stopped the run."
UA receiver Mike Thomas (five catches, 91 yards): "The games are running out. We've got to get as many wins as we can. ... When we watch film, it's always a guy here or a guy here that doesn't execute and that kills the whole play."
UW defensive end Louis Holmes (seven tackles): "We played hard, just not hard enough. ... We need to break the culture of losing around here."
UA quarterback Willie Tuitama (24 of 41 for 308 yards, one TD and one interception): "We've got to get better on third down, and we have to run the ball better. ... Our line is young, just like I am. I've tried my best to correct my mistakes, and that's what the big guys up front have to do. ... We kind of hurt ourselves with penalties. That brought back a lot of big plays."
UA safety Michael Johnson: "Coaches call plays, but it's up to the players to make the plays. ... We broke down in the second quarter. That's what cost us the game."
