The sun is setting over the great desert landscape, the lights are on, and the teams are warming up on the field. Arizona is in there red jerseys and white plans, Huskies in their new purple pants (in which they are 0-1).
Word from Hed Ed is that about 1,500 fans already are there to watch the game.
And here, coach Mike Stoops has called this the biggest game since he's been at Arizona. In a way that makes sense. As he points out, Arizona and Washington have similar goals this year, and are probably both aiming for the same bowl slots. Plus, the Wildcats' season projects as OK if they get end September 3-2 with losses just to LSU and USC. Things look very different if they're 2-3 including a loss to UW.
As for UW, a win here certainly helps with everything. But a loss shouldn't devastate them. Especially with the results in the Pac-10 today, all remaining home games – against OSU, ASU and Stanford – seem increasingly winnable. And that's all they need for a bowl.
Never miss a local story.
Finally, I'll try to file something after each quarter, but I probably won't be able to go into as much detail as I would like because the late start gives me very little time to get my writing done for the newspaper. But I'll likely have a better post-game report than usual, because I won't have time to get everything I'd like into the paper, so I'll try to fill in with late quotes and stats here.
