I got an unusual number of phone complains after the WSU game about that large picture of Lorenzo Romar that the newspaper ran as the main shot of our game coverage.
First, I just wanted to note that reporters have no say in what photographs are used with a game story. That decision is made by the folks in the Tacoma office who also edit the stories and write headlines and decide what stories go where.
But that said, a UW-WSU game is particular challenge for a newspaper, since we understand we have UW and WSU fans in our readership. We generally have tried to go very balanced with our Apple Cup football coverage. It has generally been less of an issue for WSU coverage, because Puget Sound area WSU fans just haven't expressed much interest in following the basketball team until this season.
Now, we are trying to accommodate that increased interest by increasing our WSU coverage without reducing our UW coverage. TNT reporter Todd Milles will be at every WSU game -- home and road -- for the rest of the season, as I have traditionally done with the Cougars.
Never miss a local story.
However, it's still difficult when the teams actually play each other. Was Wednesday's result a great victory in the Cougars' title drive? Or was it a significant setback for the Huskies' postseason hopes. It was both, and we tried to reflect that.
