This was an interesting game because the UW coaches decided to put their key players in purple and let them enjoy some success against the reserves.
So this game did provide some good memories for the Huskies starters to take with them into summer. And, amid all that good feeling, coaches and players seem convinced that this offense really does have enough weapons not only to rout the UW subs, but also to give other teams trouble during the regular season.
Carl Bonnell was 8-of-15 for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Locker was 4-of-8 for 38 yards and one touchdown. (Both played for the Purple. However, true freshman Ronnie Fouch also looked very poised and pretty good for the Gold.)
Despite the numbers, Coach Willingham says Locker remains the starter. However, offensive coordinator Tim Lappano indicated that Bonnell has closed the gap this spring.
Never miss a local story.
Louis Rankin carried 16 times for 99 yards and one touchdown. J.R. Hasty's numbers weren't much -- 10 carries for something like 35 yards -- but he was running behind the No. 2 line and against the No. 1 defense. I thought he did a good job of either making the first guy miss or getting yardage after first contact.
Marcel Reece had three catches -- all touchdowns -- for 44 yards.
Jared Ballman's punting -- he averaged about 26 yards -- has to be becoming a concern.
