Whatever else the Washington Huskies might or might not accomplish this season, they have unquestioned bragging rights for the city of Seattle.
The Huskies dominated cross-town rival Seattle University from the start Tuesday, on their way to a 123-76 win before a sellout crowd of 10,000 at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
It was UW’s highest point total since 1992.
UW surged to an 18-0 lead in the first five minutes. The lead reached 20 points in the eighth minute, 30 points in the 14th minutes, and 40 points in the 19th minute. Washington led 61-20 at halftime, and the second half played out as a foul-heavy suspense-free slog to the final buzzer. Seattle U ended the game with four players on the court after six Redhawks fouled out.
The Huskies domination came without No. 2 scorer Isaiah Thomas, who was scratched just before game time due to stomach illness. Quincy Pondexter had 27 points, leading six Huskies who scored in double figures. Included among them were Venoy Overton, who had a career-high 20 points while starting in place of Thomas; and Abdul Gaddy of Tacoma, who had 10 points on his 18th birthday.
The Redhawks, who wore 50s-era throwback uniforms were led by Charles Garcia, who had 20 points while wearing the No. 22 of Seattle U. legend Elgin Baylor.
The result snapped a two-game losing steak for the Huskies (13-7).
Washington returns to Pacific-10 Conference play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against another geographic rival, as Washington State visits Edmundson Pavilion.3:47/2nd:
The Dancin' Dawgs video is showing on the video scoreboard, meaning this one is in the bag: 109-67 UW in the longest most foul-infected half of basketball I can recall seeing. Four Redhawks have fouled out; all five on the floor right now have four fouls.
Halftime: Huskies up, 61-20. Quincy Pondexter has 22 points. (His career high is 31). Charles Garcia leads SU with nine ... seven at the foul line.
Seattle U. is 5-of-31 from the field and has 15 turnovers.
9:00/1st: UW 32, SU 5.
15:29/1st: Seattle U. is 0-for-9 from the field and Cameron Dollar has already called two timeouts to try to stop the bleeding as UW has raced off to a 15-0 lead.
Fashion notes: As promised, the Redhawks are wearing 50s-era throwback uniforms. They're burgundy, with the very cool retro touch of elbow-length sleeves. (Which they seem unable to shoot in.)
For UW, coach Lorenzo Romar picked tonight for his annual donning of his purple jacket.
Lineups: Isaiah Thomas is out due to stomach illness, and Venoy Overton has moved into the starting lineup in his place.
That gives the Huskies a starting lineup of Overton, Abdul Gaddy, Quincy Pondexter, Justin Holiday and Tyreese Breshers.
Gaddy, by the way, is celebrating his 18th birthday today.
Meanwhile, when Seattle U. coach Cameron Dollar was introduced, the former UW assistant received a nice hand.
