Washington is headed to the Sweet 16 for the third time in six seasons.
The 11th-seeded Huskies advanced to the East regional in Syracuse, N.Y., by running past third-seeded New Mexico, 82-64, today at HP Pavilion.
Washington used a 14-2 run midway through the first half to open their first double-digit lead. They put it away with another run 13-4 to open the second half, holding the Lobos to four points over the first seven of the second half.
Pondexter led the way with 18 points.
Never miss a local story.
Both Clarence Trent and Brendan Sherrer came in in the final minutes.
The result ends the Lobo’s winningest season at 30-5.
The reward for the Huskies (26-9) is a trip to the Carrier Dome and a Thursday match with the winner of the Sunday game between No. 2 seed West Virginia and No. 10 seed Missouri.
I'll be back with notes and quotes -- happy ones, I'd guess -- and stats.
3:05/2nd: UW up, 78-59 and Clarence Trent has just subbed in for Quincy Pondexter, who leads the Huskies with 18 points. Four Dawgs -- Pondexter, Thomas, MBA and Turner -- in double figures.
This just in: Northern Iowa 69, Kansas 67. Final. Madness.
7:04/2nd: UW up, 70-49. Pondexter 18, Thomas 14, Turner 10.
12:40/2nd: New Mexico has scored four points through the first seven and a half minutes of the second half, and UW is sailing -- apparently toward Syracuse -- 60-38.
15:44/2nd Isaiah Thomas just hit his fourth trey and the Huskies are on the verge of breaking this thing, 53-36.
However, Pondexter picked up his third foul in the first minute of the half. Romar's leaving him on the court for now.
Halftime: Dawgs up, 44-32. And for now at least it just looks like the 30-4 Lobos just aren't used to this kind of offensive pace, defensive pressure or this mix of size and athleticism. But, of course, there are 20 minutes left.
Huskies outshooting the Lobos 51.5 percent to 38.9 percent and out-rebounding them 22-18.
Pondexter leads all scorers with 10 points, Isaiah Thomas has nine on three 3-pointers. (Three of five on treys.) Eight Huskies have scored.
New Mexico's "other" guard -- Dairese Gary -- is carrying the Lobos with 15 points. Mountain West player of the year Darington Hobson has three points.
How's it looking from there?
6:44/1st: Isaiah Thomas just nailed his second trey, and the Huskies have the first double-digit lead of the game, up 31-21 on the strength of a 12-2 run.
7:54/1st: UW up, 25-21. And you do have to wonder if New Mexico can play at this pace for 40 minutes.
11:29/1st: Still even, 19-19. Quite a pace. Lobos getting to the bucket too easily so far.
15:543/1st: Tied at 11. Every Husky starter has scored already.
Pregame: The Huskies and Lobos have completed warmups. Since we narrowly avoided overtime in Game One, it looks like the UW game will be tipping off right around 3 p.m.
Game one: Well, one thriller down, and who knows what to go. But today's San Jose doubleheader got off to a thrilling start as Butler survived, 54-52, over Murray State, which lost the ball on its final possession before getting off a final shot.
