I am told that ESPN viewers have selected Washington as the underdog most likely to advance to the Elite Eight with a victory tonight over West Virginia.
UW received over 37 percent of the vote, with no other underdog getting out of the 20s. However, UW is a mild underdog at that, with the Mountaineers favored by around four points.
Meanwhile, ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb also picked Washington straight up. Interestingly, he picks that based on UW's ability to speed the tempo, something coach Lorenzo Romar admitted yesterday will be difficult to do.
"Unless you just have superior, superior athletes to the team you're playing against, in most cases if they want to slow it down, it's a little more difficult to get them to play up-tempo that for you to keep the (slower) tempo," Romar said. "We're going to play the way we play, and if the game is in a half-court situation, we have to be able to perform. But hopefully we can get some stops, hopefully we can make them uncomfortable so that maybe we can get out of transition."
The game tips at 4:27 p.m. today on CBS.
(PS: Cold and drizzly in Syracuse today, expected to turn to cold and snowy tonight.)
