Washington scored a recruiting double today, being chosen by 6-9 forward Terrence Jones and 6-5 guard Terrence Ross at ceremonies at Jefferson High School in Portland.
Here are brief comments from both new Huskies.
TERRENCE JONES, five-star forwardWhy UW)I want to represent the West Coast, continue to play with (Terrence Ross) and try to win.
Did Coach Romar know?) He didn’t know either. He told me he hopes it’s him, but he didn’t know.
Never miss a local story.
Hard decision?) Really tough. Honestly it came down to Kansas, Kentucky and Washington. I really almost grabbed the Kentucky hat right now just because I feel that they have a lot of things going on there. ... I came really close to grabbing that Kentucky hat. Kansas, I’ve been talking to coach (Bill) Self ever since my visit. It’s just a great program down there and they’re going to have a great program with or without me.
Any doubts now?) No doubts at all. I want to play with Terrence. I believe in Coach Romar and I believe in the players that are there.I just feel that I’m going to be a great addition to the team. (He added -- tellingly, now -- that he was unsure when he would sign his letter of intent.)
What position will you play?) Pretty much just like I did this year: all over the place hopefully.
Did UW's Sweet 16 run help?) Honestly, it was more this year Terrence Ross telling me I really want to go there, it’s a great situation. My problem was me staying down low. Then they got a great player – 7-footer – and that made more sense for me to play how I play now. I feel I play all over. No exact position yet.
Do you hope to go to NBA after one year?) I haven’t made that decision at all. I just plan on doing my best next year trying to win. That’s all that matters. I’m not looking at the next level.
TERRENCE ROSS, four-star guardOn Jones picking UW) When he switched his hand to UDub, I was so excited for him.
Did you lobby him to pick UW?) After I made my decision I was like, he’s going to make his decision whatever he wants to do. I have no control over it. Why did you announce earlier?) When I really knew deep in my heart that I really wanted to go to UW and be a Husky, I just couldn’t contain it. People would get on my Facebook and I’d have like 100 messages every day. So I just tried to get them off my back a little bit. Once I choose it was kind of hard keeping it to myself.
Why UW?) I have a great relationship with Coach Romar, the players, the style of play and the campus.
Did Sweet 16 run influence decision?) I helped in a way. That showed me the potential that the team has and what they can be. So that’s something that really drew my attention. (Losing just one senior) was a big that. We have really experienced players that are going to come back and help the team. We’ll have leadership to get us to where we want to be.
