“I think it’s the best one we would have been a part of since we’ve been here,” coach Lorenzo Romar said said. “The Great Alaska Shootout had some quality teams in it – they did a really nice job. The Preseason NIT is something you look forward to: You’re able to go to (Madison Square Garden), go to New York and play. But having participated in the Maui Classic before (as a UCLA assistant in 1995), I remember how good a job they did there, as well. It’s a really, really nice tournament to be a part of.”
A few notes from today:
Senior guard Venoy Overton injured his tailbone Tuesday in the win over Eastern Washington. He was limited today but is expected to take part in all drills Saturday and be ready when the Huskies open play at Maui on Monday evening against Virginia.
"I don't know if there is a more exciting player in the country when they're defending the ball," Romar said of Overton.
Romar said he expects to open the tournament against Virginia with the same lineup he used for the EWU game: Isaiah Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Justin Holliday, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Darnell Gant.
The Lahaina forecast calls for temperatures ranging from the low 80s to the upper 60s throughout the tournament.
