What a convicing, powerful start for the Huskies, who drove from their own 2-yard line - survived a shaky offensive-holding penalty that wiped out a Jake Locker 77-yard touchdown run - to still get into the end zone.
Chris Polk was a workhorse with inside runs. He carried eight times for 56 yards, including his 2-yard burst up the middle for a touchdown, and 7-0 Huskies lead.
WSU could have gotten a stop on fourth-and-inches from the Cougars' 17 when Locker's number was called on a bootleg to the left side. Defensive end Travis Long was waiting for him, but Locker broke the tackle, and scooted 6 yards for the first down.
The drive lasted 16 plays, and ate up 8:31 off the clock.
WSU's first drive went as far as the Huskies' 44 before stalling. Reid Forrest's 47-yard punt hit the turf and kicked left and was downed at the UW 2.
