Don't have a lot of time since things have run late. Early Friday, I'll get into some of the stuff shared by the only two UW staff members to even been associated with a Holiday Bowl - receivers coach Jimmie Dougherty (1997 as quarterback at Missouri) and strength and conditioning assistant Marques Tuiasosopo (1999 as starting UW quarterback).
Here are some quick-hit notes from practice Thursday night, which was an hour-long in the Dempsey Center:
** As expected, junior Everrette Thompson was running mostly at defensive tackle, but Lakes High product Sione Potoa’e and Chris Robinson saw work on the interior, too. The big plus was that Talia Crichton (knee), who’s been out the past two months, was practicing at defensive end. In fact, the sophomore ran with the No. 1 defense in both scout-team and team-session periods.
** Because it was a limited-contact practice, safety Sean Parker (shoulder) saw repetitions with the punt return team. UW coahc Steve Sarkisian noted afterward the true freshman has not been medically cleared to return to full action.
Never miss a local story.
** Fullback Zach Fogerson (shoulder) is still wearing the red jersey and is limited in practice.
** Even though running back Johri Fogerson (leg) was running and cutting, he’s not expected to play in the bowl game, Sarkisian said.
** Receiver Kevin Smith made what was easily the best practice catch of the season - a one-armed, under-the-arm pit grab over cornerback Gregory Ducre along the right sideline that would have netted a long touchdown. Brilliant.
** The only notable UW staffers with San Diego ties are Dougherty (University of San Diego assistant from 2004-08); Ivan Lewis, the strength and conditioning coach (got his masters degree at USD in 2003); and Jen Cohen, the UW's senior associate athletic director (graduated from San Diego State in 1991).
** The UW has sold its entire allotment of 11,000 tickets for the Holiday Bowl, UW director of public relations Carter Henderson said Thursday.
** Safety Nate Williams has been invited to the East-West Shrine Game.
