The University of Washington confirmed tonight that one of its student-athletes is under police investigation.
The university released a four-paragraph statement after KIRO-TV reported that a well-known UW athlete is being investigated by the Seattle Police Department for the alleged rape of 16-year-old girl on Sunday.
The girl is not being named because of her age and status as the victim of an alleged sexual assault. The athlete is not being named because he has not been arrested or charged with a crime.
The school statement says “at this time, the university does not have comment on the matter.” It goes on to specifically note that members of the men’s basketball team and coaching staff will not comment on the issue at their usual weekly media availability Tuesday.
Never miss a local story.
