Standing on the court of Oregon's new Matthew Knight Arena, Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said that Washington is seriously planning a major facility upgrade of its own.
"We are seriously looking at a new facility, not where we play, but a new practice facility that will house our offices and the weight room and everything," Romar said. "It will be a nice improvement. I wouldn’t change our gym, I love our gym. I love how it’s set up, I love the whole thing. But there are things we’re looking to improve upon and I think we’ll get it done.
"Right now we’re in the planning stages. ... I just know we’re planning to do something that’s really nice."
Romar said the project has been seriously considered for about a year. He said the new gym would be dedicated for men's and women's basketball, and could be attached to Hec Ed -- perhaps in the aquatics area or as an addition to the existing Marv Harshman practice court."
Never miss a local story.
Romar said he would have pushed for the new facility regardless of whether Knight Arena was built or not.
"Our competition isn’t necessarily Oregon," he said. "It’s on a national scale. If we only recruited in Portland or in the state of Oregon that would be one thing. But we recruit a lot of different places. Oftentimes we’re going against Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and places. Oregon has as fine a facilities as there are. But there are other places that have them, too."
