To the victor goes the spoils, and with Arizona's one-point win over Washington on Saturday, it's no surprise that Derrick Williams took Pac-10 player of the week honors over, say, UW's Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who almost certainly would have won the award had the Huskies just won the game.
Here's the release from the conference:
ARIZONA’s Derrick Williams was named Pac-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of February 14-20, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The sophomore forward led the Wildcats to a weekend sweep of Washington State and Washington.
The La Mirada, Calif., native averaged 26.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists as Arizona stretched its win steak to eight games and remain atop the Conference standings. In the 79-70 win over the Cougars, Williams had 26 points to go with eight rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. He finished off the week with a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds in the Wildcats’ 87-86 victory over the Huskies, including a game-saving block with two-tenths of a second remaining. Williams posted his ninth double-double of the season against the Huskies and now has 13 20-point games this year.
Never miss a local story.
Williams became just the seventh sophomore in Arizona history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
It is Williams’ third career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, third this season and the 79th weekly recognition for Arizona all-time.
The Wildcats hit the road to face USC on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. PT and UCLA on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
