As expected former Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz was named San Diego State's starting quarterback earlier today.
From the Union-Tribune story ...
Based on his performance in last week’s practices, the senior transfer from Oregon State received the most snaps with the first-team offense in practice Tuesday. If SDSU coaches continue to judge him better than the competition, he’ll be the Aztecs' top QB all the way to September.
The Aztecs still have eight spring practices left after completing their seventh spring practice Tuesday.
“His production last week gives him the reps with the first team today,” SDSU offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig said Tuesday.
Ludwig emphasized that the quarterback race is evaluated on film after every practice. So the situation remains fluid. But Ludwig also said he wants to “avoid watering down the reps to the extent that nobody gets better.”In 2010 as the starter, Katz completed 213-of-355 passes for 2,401 yards and 18 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He quarterbacked the Beavs against UW in the Huskies memorable 35-34 double overtime win at Husky Stadium. In that game, Katz was 17-for-31 for 206 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He also ran for a score in that game.
