Well, the Huskies wrapped up their Saturday scrimmage ... they around 85 plays of full contact followed by two series of touch during two-minute drill situations.
Overall thoughts, the No. 1 offense only went against the No. 2 and No.3 defenses. After a very sluggish start - just two first down in its first three series - the unit was able to move the ball. Keith Price in particular picked up the tempo and got hot, completing 11 straight passes at one point. He threw a 9-yard TD pass to Kasen Williams on the fourth series. Price saw Williams matched up in man-to-man coverage, and fired a ball high. Williams used his strength and size to fight off freshman Brandon Beaver for the score. On the next series for the first-team offense, Price took advantage of a busted coverage on a wheel route and hit a wide open Michael Hartvigson for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
Personnel wise: the first team offensive line of LT Micah Hatchie, LG Colin Tanigawa, C Drew Schaefer, RG James Atoe, RT Ben Riva took all the first team snaps. Jesse Callier and Bishop Sankey split time at running back. Sankey was the more productive. Callier had one 24 yard run, but struggled in his other carries. Sankey consistently picked up yardage, showing better vision running inside. With Seferian-Jenkins out, Hartvigson and Evan Hudson worked in at tight end. The receiving corps consisted of Kasen Williams as the X receiver, while DiAndre Campbell, Cody Bruns, Jaydon Mickens and Kendyl Taylor worked in at the wide receiver spots.
The first-team defense did not give up a touchdown. But it did give up some yards and first downs and a few big plays. The second team offense put together a nice 14-play drive against the first-team defense in the second series. But walk-on kicker Santiago Lopez missed a 32-yard field goal.
True freshman Shaq Thompson was on the field quite with the Huskies playing their nickel package for 90 percent of the time.In the nickel, Thompson plays inside close to the line of scrimmage like a linebacker. Don't be surprised if we see Washington play this defensive look a lot in the future. In the nickel, the defensive line was DE Josh Shirley, DT Andrew Hudson, NG Danny Shelton, DE Talia Crichton. DT Semisi Tokolahi also got some reps with that unit. The two linebackers were John Timu and Evan Zeger, while Sean Parker and Will Shamburger were at safety. Desmond Trufant was at one corner, while Greg Ducre and Marcus Peters split time at the other corner spot. Sarkisian said they are waiting for either Ducre, Peters or Tre Watson to take control of that position battle.
As for the second team offense, all three QBs vying for the back-up spot saw two series each. Both Derrick Brown and Cyler Miles looked solid at times and made a few nice throws, but both struggled getting the team in and out of the huddle to Sarkisian's liking.
