This is exciting news for me since I went to the University of Montana, but Husky athletic director Scott Woodward confirmed tonight that the Grizzlies have signed a contract to come to Husky Stadium and play a non-conference game in 2017.
Yes, it seems like a long time from now. But dammit, this is my moment.
Hat tip to Greg Rachac of the Billings Gazette for hearing about this news a few days ago.
Don't about the Montana Grizzlies? Well, I won't bore you with their success. But they are an Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) perennial powerhouse with two national titles and four other title game appearances. Yes, it's a lower level, but it's still good football.
Last season, Washington played its first game against an FCS opponent in program history, narrowly escaping with a 30-27 win over Eastern Washington. The addition of a 12th game in a season by the NCAA seems to have started a trend for UW of playing home games against Big Sky Conference teams, starting with EWU.
This season the Huskies will play Portland State on Sept. 15, next season they will face Idaho State, in 2014 it will be Eastern Washington again and in 2015 they will play Sacramento State.
