Football is here.
The first day of camp is Monday and we just finished up with head coach Steve Sarkisian and a handful of players and coaches.
News, notes and quotes:
> Sarkisian says they know what discipline will be applied to Austin Seferian-Jenkins (and Kasen Williams) and that it will be kept internal. This is not a surprise decision. Sarkisian says he has never made other punishments public prior and is not going to start doing so now. He also said he is aware of how DUI has affected the Seattle community recently, but he's not going to punish Seferian-Jenkins for the mistakes of others. Sarkisian also said the ASJ decision has "nothing to do with" gamesmanship.
> Sarkisian said, "I think this is the best team we've had since we've been here." The depth would certainly indicate that. The road schedule will challenge the end result, however.
> Offensive lineman Erik Kohler will be extremely limited in fall camp after injuring his foot at the end of the summer. Kohler missed most of last year because of knee surgery. That's a major ding to the offensive line.
> All the "ACL guys," Colin Tanigaway, Lawrence Lagafuaina, Deontae Cooper, Jesse Callier and Ryan McDaniel, are cleared for camp.
> Linebacker Cooper Pelleur has been medically disqualified. Evan Zeger has left the program. OL Coleman Shelton has been added to the roster. He was initially expected to grayshirt.
> Evan Hudson has been flipped from tight end to defensive end because -- at 6-5, 277 -- the Huskies like his size and potential there.
> Derrick Brown has been moved from quarterback to H-Back.
> Sarkisian said prime concerns are being better in the red zone, handling up-tempo offenses and running back depth.
> Sarkisian also said he wants to make the kick return game a "dynamic" part of Washington's team this season.
> Practice today will be in Husky Stadium.
> Sarkisian said he hopes the no-huddle minimizes "paralysis by analysis" for the quarterback (Keith Price) and the play-caller (Sarkisian).
> Sarkisian said Shaq Thompson will be used some on special teams and possibly offense. He'll have to consider how long Thompson was just on the field, among other situational issues.
> The first team meeting was last night. Sarkisian said numerous "leaders" spoke up during it. Among those, he mentioned Sean Parker, Keith Price, and said that Ben Riva has taken a leadership role on the offensive line.
