PLAYER OF THE GAME — Mike Anderson is emerging as Washington’s best hustle player, but he does more than run down loose balls and defend well. Anderson led UW with 19 points and 16 rebounds in this game, pulling down huge boards from his makeshift-power-forward position. He’s a good enough ball-handler to create his own shot, but he’s at his best when he’s sneaking past defenders and keeping possessions alive.
IT WAS OVER WHEN —Andrew Andrews missed the second of two free throws with UW leading 91-89 and 16.6 seconds on the clock, but Anderson grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. He made one shot to make it a three-point game and change the complexion of LBSU’s final possession, which ended with a missed 3-pointer.
STAT OF THE GAME — The Huskies had six players – Anderson, Andrews (18), C.J. Wilcox (15), Perris Blackwell (18), Nigel Williams-Goss (10) and Darin Johnson (10) – in double-figure scoring.
QUOTABLE — “Mike was our savior tonight. He just came up with a couple of and-one putbacks, he came up with a big rebound to give us another possession down the stretch. He was really good.” – UW coach Lorenzo Romar on Anderson
WHAT IT MEANS — A loss at home to this team would have been disastrous, regardless of LBSU’s tough schedule so far. The victory showed the Huskies are capable of gutting their way through a difficult game. But come January, the competition will be much stiffer. Defensive breakdowns are still a major concern.
