Have to use the word penultimate whenever you get the chance. Indeed, the Washington Huskies practiced for the second-to-last time this spring at the Dempsey Indoor on Thursday night. We have some notes and observations to pass along.
--- With the obvious exception of Cyler Miles and Damore'ea Stringfellow, every player on UW's roster was present tonight. Not all were fully active. The most notable addition to the yellow-no-contact-jersey group was linebacker Shaq Thompson, who was limited on Tuesday and had the jersey to prove it tonight. He still went through every individual drill and took reps during non-contact periods, seemingly moving fine, so it doesn't appear as if he's seriously injured or anything like that. We'll see what his participation is like on Saturday (Thursday was not one of coach Chris Petersen's scheduled days to speak with the media).
--- Joining Thompson in yellow were, as usual: S Kevin King, S Brandon Beaver, LB Scott Lawyer, LB/DE Cory Littleton, RB Ryan McDaniel and OL Micah Hatchie (though Hatchie obviously still isn't in pads).
--- Those who did not wear pads: RB Dwayne Washington, RB Jesse Callier, OL Dexter Charles, DE Jarett Finau, WR Kasen Williams and DE Josh Shirley, who is new to that group. Not sure what his ailment is.
--- The defense forced two turnovers in the first 10-15 minutes of practice, first recovering a fumble during a light 11-on-11 period, then blocking a field goal to set off the air horn again. But the offense protected the ball for the rest of practice, so the defense wound up running one gasser when it was over.
--- Today's strength-and-conditioning competition: soccer penalty kicks. Didn't have a great view of who was kicking, but the offense came away with the victory, and the defense had to run.
--- With Thompson limited, the three-man linebacker group consisted of John Timu, Keishawn Bierria and Travis Feeney. The rest of the first-team defense was consistent with what we've seen when all players are actually in attendance -- Hau'oli Kikaha, Evan Hudson, Danny Shelton and Andrew Hudson along the defensive line; Jermaine Kelly and Marcus Peters at cornerback; and Beaver (though in yellow) and Trevor Walker at safety.
--- The first-team offensive line looked the same, though Colin Tanigawa did take some snaps at right guard during an 11-on-11 period later in practice.
--- There wasn't a whole lot of 11-on-11 work tonight, though each quarterback had a possession during the final portion of practice. Jeff Lindquist took snaps with the No. 1 offensive line, and completed one of the two passes he threw. Lavon Coleman had two strong runs during that session. Troy Williams took over with the second-team offensive line. There weren't any real highlights of note.
--- Thompson is also working with the kickoff return group, serving as the secondary returner or "up man." He also caught one kickoff.
--- Former UW safety Lawyer Milloy attended practice and spoke to the team at midfield as they wrapped up practice. Damon and Brock Huard were also in attendance.
--- The practice portion of Washington's "spring preview" on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m., though the "fan fest" portion begins at 10 a.m. on the east practice field. Details here.
