FROM HONOLULU -- Here's what coach Chris Petersen said after the Huskies' 17-16 victory over Hawaii.
(On being a guy who tries to focus on fact they won) “Usually not. But I’m going to kind of work really hard to be a glass half full guy. I think our guys played hard. I think there were some good individual plays. Certainly, as a team, we didn’t play nearly like we think we can play. I think it’s going to be a big wake-up call. It’s just hard to win games against anybody. That’s the point that we’re trying to make to our guys. We come over here in this environment, especially early in the season, everybody’s got mojo and it showed up. Then we’ve just got to be more consistent.”
(On Jeff Lindquist) “I think a couple things. I was worried about us settling down early on. Again we were not settled down. They got up on us right away. So we’ve got to figure out as coaches how to do a better job. I think the second game will be better in terms of those things. But I thought first half, Jeff did a pretty solid job. The second half, things aren’t going so well and he hasn’t played in a long time and that’s hard. When it’s all good, it’s good. But when it’s not, it can be confusing and hard. It’s been a long time. It’s good for him to have to go through some of those things and we’ve got to get better at these situations."
(Think about putting Troy Williams in?) “No. That never came up. We knew we’d have some rough patches and unfortunately or fortunately, however you’re looking at it, it was at the end of the game. I’m proud of our offensive line there, that last drive, and Lavon. We needed that kind of intensity early on, if that’s what we needed to go to. And they showed it. We have it in us. But we have to get more consistent in the pass game.”
Never miss a local story.
(One or two things you expected to do better?) “I think throw the ball. We couldn’t throw it at all in the second half. So we’ll analyze that, everybody will always want to put it on the quarterback. It’s not going to always be him.”
(Was it something Hawaii did?) “No. I don’t think so. We didn’t know exactly what they were going to do but we had a couple contingency plans. I think our guys knew how to pick up most of their blitzes. But it’s hard for me to say more without looking at the tape.”
(Hawaii scoring early?) “I just think we were on our heels too much. I just felt like our whole team played too tight. We got off to a bad start, and we were playing not to lose. Our defense would get into a rhythm, do some good things, and our offense wouldn’t do anything and it just started to snowball a little bit. We don’t catch the ball as a punt returner at all. Just a lot of those things … we’ve got to have a much more aggressive mindset – ‘hey, we’re supposed to win, and we’re supposed to do this, and we’re not winning’ and everybody tightens up and now we don’t play how we can play.”
(Lindquist pooch punt?) “Same thing too. I really wanted to go for it. I think they were going to bring a blitz into a run that we weren’t really liking. I’m not sure if they were going to bring it. We thought that’s what we were going to bring. So we were going to play it a little safer, let them drive the length of the field. But a little bit of that is on me as well. We’ve got to all get more confident with each other.”
(Safe to assume Cyler Miles starts at QB?) “You know what, we’re going to do this thing the right way. We’re going to look at this with a fine-toothed comb and figure out what the best is, and we’ll go that direction. I’m not trying to … We’ll figure it out early next week and go from there.”
(Rotating defensive linemen?) “We do like to play a lot of guys. I think we need to build depth. It keeps guys fresh. I think it’s very hard to just leave guys in on defense, certainly in that d-line, and expect them to play as many plays as an o-line plays. You expend much more energy on defense running to the ball like you do. The o-line gets to stand there for the most part.”
(Budda Baker?) “It was good to see him in there. I know he competed hard. I think he did a good, solid job without looking at the tape.”
(No Ben Riva?) “Ben’s had a little bit of an issue and been working through it, been getting better. Coleman Shelton’s been playing really well. We didn’t bat an eye at that at all. But it would be nice to hopefully get Ben back in there going as well.”
(Touchdown pass from Jeff Lindquist to John Ross?) “It was beautiful. I know we can do some of that. It doesn’t need to be all the time. We had John Ross on a go route down the sideline, too, we throw the ball out of bounds when we had him open again. We just need to be a little more consistent. Probably a lot more consistent.”
(Pulling Jaydon Mickens at punt returner?) “I think he was just pressing too hard as well. We’ll get him going and he’s going to be a good punt returner.”
