Here's some of what Huskies defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski told reporters on Tuesday morning.
(Good defensive performances on the road?) “I don’t know. Guys, maybe they feel less pressure. I don’t know. I wish I knew, I could bottle it up and get them to do it all the time. It always comes back to our preparation. It’s not always what we do in practice, but how we prepare, watch the video, mentally, the last couple days leading up to it, how we prepare ourselves for it. We’re not around these guys 24/7 so we can’t get into their heads. If we could, we could figure out a way to jumpstart us and be more consistent.”
(How have they been in practice this week?) “These kids are resilient. Good practice today, good practice yesterday. Good energy. Hey man – it’s a dog eat dog world, but you know what? The sun came up, we’re out to get better, and that’s the mentality that they have and we need to have.”
(On Shaq Thompson returning to linebacker) “I shot him a text, said ‘welcome back to the dark side.’ It’s good to have him back.”
Never miss a local story.
(On John Ross III at CB) “He did pretty good. He only had one bust. He knew it right when he did it. Just the consistency, to throw him out there, week’s notice, he did a pretty good job.”
(Does his athleticism help make up for certain things?) “Definitely. He’s a guy that is so explosive that he can be out of position and be a little late, bad with his eyes, and make up for it because of that speed.”
(On Arizona’s offense) “It’s very similar to triple-option without the pitch. The pitch is the throw. So they’ll run zone-read, they’re going to run it and run it and run it, then he pulls it and you play the quarterback, and he’s pitching it out there. they do a good job and it’s real up-tempo. They just keep coming and keep coming. Again, I sound like a broken record, but it’s going to come down to us doing our job, being in good position, and then tackling. We’ve got to finish. We do that, we’ll be all right. If not, we make it tough on ourselves.”
(Are you optimistic Hau’oli Kikaha will play?) “Yeah, I think so. He’s out there running around. Just being careful with him.”
(On Budda Baker) “Budda is a rare, rare guy, because as a true freshman, he already has really good work ethic habits. The guy’s relentless. He runs everywhere, plays hard. He’s one of those guys you’ve got to slow down, and that’s what you want as a coach.”
