FROM SCOTTSDALE -- The Huskies football team held its second practice yesterday after arriving in the Phoenix area, and they will practice again this afternoon at nearby Chaparral High School. We'll have interviews and the usual fare afterward, but for now, here are some links.
--- Here is our story in today's newspaper about sophomore defensive end Joe Mathis, who coaches and teammates say is a different person (and player) than he was at the start of the season.
--- The UW men's basketball team dropped from 13th to 21st in the AP top 25 poll after losing to Stony Brook. The Huskies fell to 19th in the USA Today coaches poll.
--- The UW women's basketball team picked up a big victory last night at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, beating No. 5-ranked Texas A&M 70-49 behind 32 points from Kelsey Plum.
Lastly, a personal note -- after the bowl game, and after UW's basketball game at Stanford, I'll likely take a few days off to attend the memorial service for my grandfather, Roger Verle Caple, who died on Saturday night at age 92. He was a University of Washington graduate, an avid Huskies (and Mariners) fan, a veteran of World War II and one of the most positive influences in my life, both as a sports fan and as a person. I realize that's neither here nor there, but he read this space daily, so it seemed only appropriate to commemorate his passing. Thanks for obliging.
