Here's everything Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar said after his team's 85-77 victory over Oregon at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Sunday night.
(Opening statement) “Hats off to our guys in the second half. We came out, Nigel (Williams-Goss) hit a 3-point shot early in the half, maybe kind of got us going a little bit. But I thought we didn’t get any of the loose balls in the first half. We were just kind of slow to react. We did a better job in the second half. If you ask me, Joseph Young is one the most feared guys in this league, as far as I’m concerned, and our guys did a good job of staying near him and not letting him go crazy like he’s so capable of doing. Robert Upshaw was really good around the rim. Seven offensive rebounds with five, six blocks, and then our guards in the second half, Nigel and Andrew, really got going and helped us. It was good to see Donaven Dorsey break out and play similar to how he played in the preseason. And as I’m naming all these different guys, you see it’s a real team effort. When our guys step up like this offensively, it really helps.”
(Is this what you meant by guys just making open shots?) “Pretty much it. I think we have a triangle of guys that can put the ball in the basket, but we need to fill in the blanks at times. Tonight, we filled in the blanks.”
(Seemed like Andrew Andrews attacked the basket well) “Andrew did a very, very good job of picking his spots and being aggressive and still maintaining a balance of taking good shots. He did a really good job.”
Never miss a local story.
(Turning point?) “I really thought when Nigel hit the opener, the 3, that cut it seven right away. Right away it wasn’t a double-digit lead anymore. I think a couple times we came down and Donaven Dorsey hit big shots. It’s something with our team … it’s so uplifting when we start to see a couple go in. A couple times in that half I thought we knocked some shots down, kind of lifted us up.”
(What did you talk about at halftime?) “We talked about how we were very fortunate to be down 10. It could have easily been 20. We were very fortunate. And we were down 10 after playing the way we did, we’d have a chance to get back in the game. And we talked about how we kind of wanted to do that.”
(On overcoming foul trouble early) “It was huge. … our depth, we’re OK if we don’t get into foul trouble, and tonight we did. Shawn and Robert, both big guys. Gilles Dierickx came in and did a good job filling in when those guys were out, but it just kind of messed up our rotation a little bit. We just weren’t quite as good defensively.”
(On how big a home sweep was this weekend) “I wouldn’t have liked to have seen a situation where we wouldn’t have done this. Now that we have won these two, we have a little bit more life now. Hopefully we can get together and hit this road and play well on the road. Two tough opponents, we know that.”
(On Donaven Dorsey scoring off the bench) “He definitely helps loosen everything up when he’s knocking shots down, and our guys know it. Our guys find him. If he hits one, our guys are looking for him, which is good. But Donaven had five rebounds, and that was big that henot only made 3s, but I think he drove to the basket once, even got a steal and a dunk. He was a little more active tonight, and that helps immensely.”
(On how the zone defense has been the past two games) “I think we’ve done a pretty good job. The key to that is Shawn Kemp Jr. Shawn is used to playing in the paint defensively. All his life, he’s played in the paint because of his size, and with Robert, he’s had to play on the perimeter, and he’s adjusted quite well. And it makes us really long and we can get to the shooters with him in there.”
