The Huskies' 13th practice of the spring was a less physical affair, as they wore only helmets, jerseys and shorts -- no pads -- on another sunny, clear day at Husky Stadium.
Here are a few notes, as usual.
--- The personnel update: DL Vita Vea joined the group of players sidelined by injury, wearing a hefty brace on his right knee. WR John Ross III, DB Trevor Walker, DB Jermaine Kelly, LB Keishawn Bierria, LB Travis Feeney, OL Coleman Shelton, OL Dexter Charles remain out or limited. DB Kevin King actually put on a helmet and went through a few drills, but is also still very limited and was wearing a brace on his right knee. DBs Brandon Lewis and Brandon Beaver are still wearing yellow, no-contact jerseys, but they participated fully. And TE Drew Sample is still in yellow, too. I did not see OL Cory Fuavai.
--- There wasn't quite as much 11-on-11 action today, though the final period of practice remained the same with each of the three quarterbacks given a chance to put together a scoring drive. None of them were successful. Jeff Lindquist handed to Dwayne Washington for a one-yard gain, then carried a keeper for three yards and threw an incompletion on third down. He ran on fourth down, too, but came up short of the sticks, and that was that.
Jake Browning was up next with the first-team offense against the first-team defense, and actually put together a decent drive, highlighted by a 14-yard completion to Jaydon Mickens and a 25-yard throw to Marvin Hall that moved the ball to the 33-yard line. Two plays later, though, Browning's pass to Hall was intercepted by safety Budda Baker in the end zone.
K.J. Carta-Samuels put together a few nice plays, as well, including a 6-yard run to convert a third-down, and an 11-yard completion to walk-on WR Drew Before on 3rd-and-5. But after RB Ralph Kinne gained a first-down on an 8-yard rush to the plus-33-yard line, Carta-Samuels threw incomplete, then completed a 5-yard pass to walk-on WR Neel Salukhe before taking a sack from LB Matt Preston on third down.
--- The defense came up with one other turnover, an interception by Brandon Lewis off a pass thrown by Browning to WR Taelon Parson during an 11-on-11 period. Browning made a nice play to evade a rush by DL Jaylen Johnson, rolled to his left and fit the throw between a few defenders, but the ball bounced off Parson's hands and right to Lewis. Still, a nice effort by Browning to keep the play alive and throw a catchable pass.
--- Baker and WR Dante Pettis continue to work on fielding punts.
--- Psalm Wooching had a "sack" of Browning during an earlier 11-on-11 period, and Cory Littleton and Azeem Victor converged for a sack a little earlier.
--- The first-team defense usually featured Taniela Tupou, Elijah Qualls and Will Dissly along the defensive line, with JoJo Mathis at buck linebacker, Scott Lawyer, Cory Littleton and Azeem Victor rounding out the linebacker corps, Sidney Jones and Darren Gardenhire at corner, and Baker and Brian Clay at safety. The first-team offensive line remains the same: Jake Eldrenkamp, Dane Crane, Siosifa Tufunga, Shane Brostek and Matt James.
--- Tristan Vizcaino made a pair of 34-yard field goals on consecutive snaps to cap the first 11-on-11 period of practice.
--- The Huskies practice again on Wednesday, their final workout before Saturday's "spring preview" at Husky Stadium.
