Steven Gray scored 27 points, and Matt Bouldin added 21 to help Gonzaga overcome a sluggish first half on its way to a 76-72 win over Colorado in the opening round of the Maui Invitational on Monday in Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Bulldogs trailed by 11 at halftime before using a 22-9 run to take their first lead of the second half with less than five minutes to go.

Colorado (3-1) trailed by one with a minute to go, but couldn’t tie it as Gonzaga (3-1) advanced to today’s semifinals.

Huskies land big man

Turned down by Kentwood High big man Joshua Smith, who signed with UCLA last week, Washington rebounded by getting a verbal commitment from Turkish center Enes Kanter, the Seattle Times reported Monday.

The 6-foot-10, 240-pound Kanter plays for Stoneridge Preparatory School in Simi Valley, Calif. He’s rated a five-star player by Scout.com and reportedly chose the Huskies over UCLA, USC, Indiana and UNLV.

Syracuse shoots to No. 10

Syracuse was so impressive in the 2K Sports Classic that it made one of the best entrances ever into The Associated Press’ college basketball poll.

The Orange, who beat California and North Carolina by an average of 19 points in winning the tournament at Madison Square Garden, went from unranked to No. 10, the third-best jump-in in poll history.

At No. 11 North Carolina 93, Gardner-Webb 72: Deon Thompson scored 22 points for the Tar Heels (5-1).

Grayson Flittner scored 32 points and hit nine 3-pointers for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (3-1).

Southern California forward Kasey Cunningham is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee. The junior starter also tore the meniscus in his knee while grabbing a rebound in Saturday’s loss to Loyola Marymount. … A lawyer for UCLA starter Nikola Dragovic says his client will plead not guilty in an assault case that led to his suspension. Dragovic and a friend were arrested last week on a felony warrant charging them in an October incident in which the basketball player allegedly knocked a man into a glass display case at a Hollywood concert.
